Today, January 31, three anti-LGBTQ bills were released in the Iowa legislature. HF2201 would restrict educators from discussing sexual orientation and gender identity, HF2202 would allow discrimination against transgender athletes in Iowa school athletics programs, and SF2130 would force Iowans to disclose their sexual orientation on marriage certificates which could then be used to deny them custody of their children in the future.
Each piece of legislation mentioned above is harmful to LGBTQ Iowans, but the amount of support for HF2201 and HF2202 make these two bills uniquely dangerous.
LGBTQ Iowans are just like anyone else. They deserve to raise their children, get a quality education, and compete in extracurricular activities. These bills only offer solutions to imagined problems.
We know we just asked you to take action earlier this week, and we may have to ask again next week, and/or the week after that. We also know, however, that these assualts on LGBTQ Iowans will not stop on their own. We must fight them. Thank you for continuing to fight with us.
